Homewood Campus Wireless Transition

Hopkins is performing a major upgrade to the wifi infrastructure on the Homewood campus. The new infrastructure will be faster, provide better coverage, and ensure compatibility with the latest industry standards. As we improve our wireless infrastructure through phased rollouts, however, there will be some disruptions possible as students, faculty, and staff move among campus buildings and change connections between the upgraded and legacy wifi access points.  These disruptions will primarily be visible by momentarily dropped connections, and, on Apple devices, extra prompts to accept security certificates.

You can smooth this transition by making some configuration steps on your devices:

  • Most android devices will need to accept the wireless certificates on ‘JHGuestnet’ and ‘hopkins’ on the initial transition. After that initial certificate request, no further action should be necessary to remain connected to wireless.
  • If you are an Apple user (iPhone or Mac), please select the appropriate link below for instructions to install the Apple IOS Configurator or Apple MAC OS Configurator.  Apple users can download the configurator file at any time, as it is compatible with both the new and legacy wifi.  Once the Apple devices are prompted with the new certificate, the devices will be prepared to work on both networks seamlessly.

Please use the Wireless Connectivity Troubleshooting page as a reference for any device connection, service and configuration questions during the WiFi access Point upgrade.

Frequently Asked Questions:

My IOS device changes WiFi networks randomly
The wireless network says connected but I can’t access the internet
  • First, restart your device.  Then, forget the network from your wireless settings. Search for networks again.  If your issue is with JHGuestnet, and you are still unable to access the internet, launch a web browser and agree to the “Acceptable Use Policy”.
I cannot connect to the ‘hopkins’ network
  • Check that the username is JHED ID only – for example “JJohns2” instead of “jjohns2@jh.edu”
I am connected to the wireless network but I cannot access a particular URL
  • Check the DNS settings on your device. On Windows devices use this link for the procedure to check and change this setting:  Windows DNS Checking Procedure.  For MAC users use this link for the procedure to check the DNS setting Mac OS DNS Setting.
I am connected to wireless but my device keeps losing connection
  • Check that only one wireless network is set to “connect automatically.”  By configuring multiple networks to connect automatically can cause the wireless card to “hop” between whatever network is strongest.  The device will want to connect to the stronger network signal causing it to disconnect from one network and connect to a different network.   If this change does not resolve your issue, – please use this link to submit a ticket to the IT Help Desk.  Include the following information
  • Date and time of the issue
  • Building, floor, room number
  • Device MAC (Media Access Control) address
How to find the MAC address on your device

I have verified my username and password but I am still unable to connect
  • This may be an authentication issue.  Please take the following steps to verify that your JHED ID and Password are correct by logging into my.jh.edu – without single sign-on.
    • If the JHED account is locked out, you will be unable to authenticate to the wireless network.
    • If JHED password is changed, you will need to update the password in the settings.
